Berthed in the shelter below the oldest town in Corsica, Bonifacio extends for some distance along the cliff-tops, which are about 70 meters (230 feet) high on the southern tip of the French island of Corsica.
Any wonder it is a magnet for charter guests, when it comprises untouched relics of the past, Medieval and prehistoric, dramatic landscapes and a charming mountain village, with welcoming and warm hospitality in its bars, brasseries and quaint shops.
Bonifacio draws visitors from all over the world to marvel at its medieval houses precariously perched on the edge of brilliant white limestone cliffs.
Much of the allure of Bonifacio lies in its citadel and its fascinating avenues. From the marina, the paved steps of montée du Rastello and montée St-Roch lead to the citadel's gateway, Porte de Gênes, with its original 16th-century drawbridge.
Stroll the ramparts of the 13th-century Bastion de l'Étendard to place du Marché and place de la Manichella for dazzling views over the turquoise Bouches de Bonifacio (Straits).
On the other side of the citadel, the Escalier du Roi d'Aragon features 187 steep steps down to an underground freshwater well – essential for the preservation of life in this fortress town.
Also worth visiting is the Gothic marvel of Église Ste-Dominique, the largest church on Corsica, not far from the eerie Marine Cemetery of elaborate tombs.
Not far from Bonifacio is the protected island cluster of Île Lavezzi which can truly be described as paradise, particularly for those who love nothing better than diving, swimming, or simply immersing themselves in natural beauty.
From here, the views to Bonifacio and its cliffs are superb, and charter guests can take their yacht tender to some of the sublime caverns such as Grotte du Sdragonatu with its brightly coloured seabed is a single huge chamber with a hole in the roof shaped like a map of Corsica, and "Napoleon's Hat", named in honour of Corsica's most famous son.
